Fireproof Safes
Fireproof safes protect paper documents such as deeds, contracts, passports, certificates and financial records from destruction in a fire. A fire-rated safe keeps its interior below the temperature at which paper is damaged for a tested length of time, so the contents survive while the fire is brought under control.
Fire ratings in this range run from 30 to 120 minutes for paper. Depending on the series, the safes are tested to EN 1047-1, EN 15659 (light fire protection), NT Fire 017 or UL 72, all of which limit the inside temperature to around 170–177°C for paper. Some models are tested in the manufacturer's own fire laboratory rather than independently certified, and some document cabinets are built from non-combustible materials (DIN 4102) without a timed fire rating. Each product page shows the fire rating and how it was tested.
Many models combine fire protection with a burglary rating, from EN 14450 S2 to EN 1143-1 Grade I, for documents and valuables in one safe. What you can insure inside depends on your policy and your market, so confirm the sum with your insurer.
These safes are rated for paper. Hard drives, USB sticks and tapes are damaged at much lower temperatures and need a data-rated safe from our Fireproof Data Safes range. Sizes run from compact home models to large office cabinets for ring binders, with key or electronic code locks. Delivery, installation and anchoring can be arranged; many fire-rated safes can only be anchored to the floor.
